In 2013, the Hantoo Art Group made a home for itself! 15 years have gone, since the collective’s founding in 1998, and the courageous Hantoo warriors have been living a nomadic life fueled by their tremendous creativities. And today, they are still passionate and ever so romantic in their views for art, but something has changed with the way they see the world.
In the 15th year since the beginning of Hantoo, the members have joined together in action and made the decision to have a tangible place to call their “home”. In this space, they will continue to support each other and share their resources and unbounded dreams for art. They will continue to inspire and encourage each other and strive forward together through good times and bad times. Hantoo Li̍p-Tshù is an exhibition that has come to fruition under the right timing, location, and people. The exhibition marks the important moment when the members of Hantoo and their friends and families can jointly witness the hard work Hantoo has put forth on their journey as a contemporary art collective, and how they have built a home through dedication and determination.
11 artists that are proud home-owners of Hantoo will take part in this momentous exhibition for their own housewarming. The artworks included will be based on each artist’s creative traits and could be divided into the following categories: artists that have the unique touch for creating a world of fantasies and adventures, and they are Yang Mao-Lin, Lee Min-Jong, and Lian Jian-Shing; artists that continue to push themselves into the extreme to investigate the conflicts between life’s love and lust, and they are Wu Tien-Chang and Kuo Wei-Kuo; artists that have showed dedicated concerns for social changes and issues of humanity, and they are Lu Hsien-Ming and Chang Ling; artists that roam freely in abstract expressionism, and they are Yang Jen-Ming and Lai Hsin-Lung; and last but not least, the ones that are skilled in humorously using and criticizing the media and the power of visual image, and they are Tu Wei-Cheng and Chen Ching-Yao.
In the 80s, a time when martial law was about to be lifted in Taiwan, the founding members of Hantoo went through a period of drastic social, political, economic changes, and at some level, they are the epitome of the spirit of reform for contemporary art in Taiwan from the 80s till three decades later into the present day. As new members join Hantoo, the collective is able to demonstrate further diversity and substantiality in their creative endeavors. Furthermore, each member’s distinctive creative context has left important marks in the launching and development of contemporary art in Taiwan. This exhibition is intended to enhance the unique personal qualities that each artist possesses and to present their sincere dialogues with the times, as they boldly announce to the world who they are (or what their artworks are). Moreover, the exhibition is also a tribute to their everlasting love for art.
